Did You Know ...

... that 67 years ago today, April 18, 1945, journalist Ernie Pyle was killed by Japanese machine-gun fire while covering the Battle of Okinawa in World War II? The Pulitzer Prize-winning Pyle was immensely popular with the average soldier, about whom he wrote so often.

... that 106 years ago today, April 18, 1906, San Francisco, Calif., was hit by a massive earthquake that destroyed a substantial part of the city? The earthquake, estimated to have been almost an 8.0 on the Richter Scale, and the resulting fires are said to have killed around 3,000 people.

... that 237 years ago today, April 18, 1775, the famous "midnight ride" of Paul Revere began as he and fellow patriot William Dawes set out to alert Minutemen in Lexington, Mass., to the approach of British troops intent on arresting Samuel Adams and John Hancock?

Ken Tate, along with his wife, Janice, edits Good Old Days magazine and books for House of White Birches, and the Annie's Attic Mysteries series for DRG. Both publishers are located in Berne, Ind. Ken and Janice live in the Ozark Mountains of north Arkansas on property that has been in their family for nearly a century.

Ken began working with Good Old Days in 1989 after a long career editing newspapers and magazines. It was only natural, Ken says, that Janice joined him in editing the nostalgia magazines in 1997. She had worked with him for years on various publications before the birth of their three children.

In addition to their work on the magazine and books, Ken and Janice run a small ranching operation on the 400-acre, old home place and enjoy time with their extended family. Ken is looking forward to the golden anniversary of Good Old Days in 2014, which will also mark his silver anniversary with the magazine. Retirement, he contends, is highly overrated -- at least for him.
