... In 1942, talented comedic actress Carole Lombard, wife of actor Clark Gable, died in a plane crash. She was on her way home to Los Angeles after promoting the purchase of war bonds in her home state of Indiana.

... In 1945, Adolph Hitler descended into his 18-room bunker under the German Chancellery to plot defense strategy against the advancing Russian army. He remained there for 105 days, until, seeing that there was no stopping the Allies, he and his wife, Eva, committed suicide.
