Ah, summer. If the always-overflowing submissions for our July/August issue of Good Old Days is any indication, summer was the hallmark of our Good Old Days experiences, the backdrop of our most memorable moments. And for many, those bright, sunny days still shine in our memory banks.

One of my favorite summer pastimes was playing baseball and softball with the neighbor kids on the makeshift ball diamond in the river bottom area behind our house. And when the middle of July rolled around, my folks would host a gathering of friends for a cookout and softball games. There was a pack of teenage boys among the group (including two of my brothers) who deemed themselves exceptional athletes. One year, they challenged their dads to a softball game, with the adolescent arrogance that they would bring home the trophy without much effort. The dads, none of whom deemed themselves exceptional athletes, accepted the challenge. And they invited three girls, including me, to join their team. Ha, the boys thought, This will be easy. Well, when those out-of-shape dads stepped up to the plate to swing their bats, their heftiness proved to be an advantage. Over and over, they hit line drives, doubles, triples and home runs. And whenever their bats hit a ball, we lightweight girls became their pinch runners and sailed around the bases like we had wings on our feet.

We won the game and brandished the trophy in the victory photo (See above. Thatís me in the forefront hoisting the trophy, and thatís my dad, pointing to the outfield in Babe Ruth-style). I will never forget that delightfully surprising summer occasion. I like to send this picture to my brothers on a regular basis, just to make sure that bright, sunny day still shines in their memory banks too.

'Til next time,
